10 Ugliest Cities in Europe According to the Europeans Who Live There

I’ll preface this article by saying that everyone’s priorities are different when choosing a place to live or visit. Inquisitive about the world, someone asked a popular online travel forum for examples of the “ugliest cities” in each reader’s European country. If you’re curious yourself, here are the top-voted answers based on personal opinions from travelers and locals.
1. Port Talbot, Wales

Although it’s technically a town and not a city, one local nominates Port Talbot as Wales’ ugliest town. They say, “The elevated section of the M4 motorway linking South Wales with London cuts above the town, and in the distance is the steelworks.
It’s a significant employer for the area, but when it’s operating, that stretch of the motorway stinks of sulfur, and it’s always dominating the horizon.
2. Zoetermeer, Netherlands

Another local volunteers that their city looks like a nondescript town in the American Midwest. A second person admits they used to work in Zoetermeer and was grateful to work along the train line to avoid going into town.
3. Den Helder, Netherlands

A top comment on the thread mentions that Den Helder “Was once voted the last place where you would want to be found.” Another follows up with, “This city is so forgettable that I didn’t even think about it.”
Sorry Den Helder.
4. Barreiro, Portugal

Numerous travelers and citizens suggested Barreiro. “It’s an industrial town with some Soviet architecture-like buildings. It kinda looks like those places from Eastern Europe,” shares a local.
5. Helsinge, Demark

Someone calls Helsinge out specifically, explaining that it “Was nicknamed Hæslinge, meaning ugly or hideous.”
6. Wels, Austria

“It’s boring, ugly, and insignificant” was the most succinct comment regarding this city. They added, “Literally, the only redeeming thing about it is that old tower.”
7. Kazincbarcika, Hungary

One local explains that all the old mine cities are “the worst” because after “the mines were closed, everything sadly stopped improving and then went backwards.”
8. Kharkiv, Ukraine

Not everyone agreed with having Kharkiv on the list. While one person said that it has “nothing but run down architecture,” another went out of their way to say that it’s worth visiting and there are a lot of nice buildings in Kharkiv.
9. Ružomberok, Slovakia

Although this one is technically a town, the person who shouts out Ružomberok says it is a “really dirty city because of factories and has endless traffic jams.”
10. Charleroi, Belgium

Countless people agree with one who calls Charleroi “Europe’s Detroit,” and another adds that it’s been called the ugliest city in Belgium and Europe.
