So, which American cities are the cleanest? This list shares the main urban contenders, as voted by Americans themselves.

1. Long Beach, California

California can be hailed for its forward-thinking eco legislation. Within the state, the city of Long Beach reigns. It’s been named “the cleanest city in America” in one Forbes list, based on an examination of its “quantity of recycling collectors, garbage disposal satisfaction, electric vehicle market share and pollution,” alongside other factors.

2. Norfolk, Virginia

This Virginia-based city is applauded for its air quality. An initiative encouraging residents to “reduce litter, recycle right, and beautify Norfolk through education and volunteerism” has possibly contributed to the population’s cleanliness satisfaction. Activities like community clean-up days also go a long way.

3. Chicago, Illinois

Most people voted Chicago as the cleanest city in America. It is the third-largest city in the United States, a bustling metropolis committed to sustainability. The city’s comprehensive recycling program, with its massive green spaces, bike-friendly roads, and public transportation have earned it the title of the cleanest city in America.

4. Minneapolis, Minnesota

5. Boston, Massachusetts 

Boston is home to some of the country’s most well known universities and hospitals, and visitors also find it one of the cleanest cities in the United States. This cleanliness is a result of its strict recycling laws, its network of bike paths, and a public transportation system that is one of the best in the country.

6. Washington, DC

The nation’s capital is home to some of the most iconic landmarks in the world, but it is also one of the cleanest cities in the United States. Strict environmental regulations, comprehensive recycling programs, and efforts to reduce carbon emissions have helped to make it one of the most sustainable cities in the country.

7. Salt Lake City, Utah
